National Hispanic Heritage Month

*information for this post was in part supplied by Hormel Foods through their Hormel Extended Family Blogger program. No compensation was received for this post.

Did you know that National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed in the United States each year from September 15th to October 15th? It serves as a time to recognize the histories, cultures and contributions of Latino and Hispanic Americans to the United States. This group's heritage and culture have enhanced our country and shaped our national character with their ethnic traditions, especially their food.

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Hormel, who has many different Hispanic and Latino inspired brands including Chi-Chi's Salsa, Herdez, La Victoria, Wholly Guacamole, Don Miguel Mexican Foods and more, has come up with some suggestions on recipes that would be a great selection for an at home celebration.

Appetizers:
Black Bean Soup
Herdez Creamy Tomatillo Avocado Salsa

Main Courses:
Shredded Beef Enchiladas
Chicken with Tomato Mango Relish

Desserts:
Herdez Ellen's Chocolate Chipotle Ice Cream
Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies

Whereas all of the recipes sound delicious, I must say that I am most intrigued by the desserts. I think that I might just have to experiment first with the chocolate ice cream.

Some other ideas that I would throw out there from my own collection are Chicken Enchilada Pasta or Taco Filled Shells and Apple Enchiladas.

Seasonal Allergies #Claritin

A few weeks back, I heard someone say that this year the allergies were going to be rougher because the summer wasn't hot. I'm not sure I fully understand the correlation, but as a mom to a child that suffers from allergies, I am here to say it certainly seems true.

I can remember the first year that my son suffered from allergies. He was all stuffy, which could have been anything, but when I looked at his eyes, I just knew it wasn't a cold.

Of course, my son's allergies are worst in spring and early fall, which conveniently (NOT!) coincides with soccer and baseball seasons. So, at the peak time of allergies for him, he is also spending extra time outside...and playing and breathing hard, which only seems to exacerbate the issues. Thankfully, for us, Children's Claritin and some eye drops really help to make the allergy seasons more bearable for him.

As a mom crew member, Claritin has shared the following Back to School Allergy Tips:

1. Be sure to have Children’s Claritin, the #1 pediatrician-recommended non-drowsy allergy brand, on hand!

2. Multi-vitamins are building blocks to having a strong immune system. Make taking a multi-vitamin part of your child’s daily routine.

3. Let there be light! Mold doesn't like sunlight, so try to keep your curtains open during the day. Should be easy during the summer months!

4. Did you know that most pillows trap allergens, dust mites, and bacteria? Monitor the cleanliness of the pillow your child with allergies sleeps on and replace if necessary.

5. Back to school season means lots of laundry for many moms. Be sure to remove laundry from the washing machine promptly. Allowing wet clothes to sit in the washer means mold can quickly grow there.

6. Monitor pollen counts and adjust outdoor before and after school activities accordingly. Dry, windy days can be particularly high in pollen.

7. Showering or bathing at the end of the day as opposed to the morning can be helpful in removing allergens from body surfaces and hair.

8. Stay hydrated! Always send your child to school with a bottle of water. Drinking lots of clear fluids through the day can help get rid of toxins and flush out body.

9. Peak pollen production typically occurs in early morning, so try to plan outside activities at other times of the day.

Disney Junior Live! Pirate & Princess Adventure, coming to Youngstown, #giveaway

No compensation was received for this post. My family and I have the opportunity to enjoy the show. Feld Entertainment provided the tickets and the information for this post. All opinions expressed are entirely my own or that of my family.
I will probably never forget the day that we went to Target (we are there almost daily it seems) to pick up a few things that we needed and were looking in the toy section for my daughter, who had a few dollars to spend. As we walked up and down the aisles, we came across the row with the Disney plush toys. She looked and almost immediately saw a large stuffed Jake that she just had to have. I questioned it, not only because I had never seen her watch the show or talk about Jake before but also as I do most requests for stuffed toys, because they quickly fall out of favor and she is always wanting a new one.

I told her it wasn't on sale and I didn't realize she was a fan, so I said that we had to wait to get it. That way, she could think about it and make sure that was how she wanted to spend her money. I explained, that if it went on sale and she still wanted it, then maybe we could come back and get it. She immediately started to melt down. I don't think that I had ever seen her throw a fit quite like this. So, I calmly (as best I could stay calm), picked her up and carried her out of the store, leaving behind the cart of items that I had come to pick up. I don't know that anyone I know was there as I walked out carrying my very upset and loud daughter, as I was not about to make eye contact with anyone.

We talked about it later and she understood that was not the way to act and that sometimes, we have to wait and get things right away when we think that we want them. I explained again that I had never seen her even watch the show or talk about Jake. She told me that they watched it at daycare and she was a fan. So, as things have a way of working out, we set up Jake to record and she now watches it regularly. We did eventually, a few months later, buy that large stuffed Jake, when he was on sale...but only after we reviewed the experience of the first time she asked for Jake and what was wrong with her approach. She regularly watches his show with him and frequently he is the stuffed toy of choice at bedtime. So, in the end, it worked out that she has stuck with him and not lost interest.

She also is a fan of Sofia the First and anxiously awaits the release of each new episode, so when I learned that Disney Junior Live! Pirate & Princess Adventure was coming to Youngstown, I knew that she would be very excited to go and see two of her favorite Disney Junior characters live.

Del Monte FruitBurst review and #giveaway

No compensation was received for this post. DelMonte provided information for the post, a gift pack for my family and one for the giveaway. All opinions expressed are entirely my own or that of my family.

We recently had the chance to try a new product from Del Monte® - new Fruit Burst™ Squeezers. We tried Simply Fruit - Strawberry and Fruit + Veggie - Peach-Mango. As a mom, I really like the convenience of getting 1 1/2 servings of fruit or fruit and veggies in an easy to eat pouch. When we are enjoying them at home, we typically will have them right from the fridge, but when we are on the go, I like knowing that they are portable, easy to consume (no utensils required) and don't require refrigeration (unless you don't eat it all at once, then you should refrigerate the remaining product). I like that all of the sweetness in the product comes from fruit puree and juice concentrates. For me, the strangest part was the texture - it is a very smooth puree, but it has a great flavor. The kids consider them to be a treat (as a mom, I love when fruits and vegetables are a treat) and are excited when they are included in their lunch or as a snack. I have already been asked to buy more for them to have as snacks and in their lunches.

About Fruit Burst™ Squeezers

Made in the U.S.A., Del Monte Fruit Burst™ Squeezers contain 1 ½ servings of fruit or fruit and veggies and are an excellent source of vitamins A and C. In addition, Del Monte Fruit Burst™ Squeezers contain no artificial flavors or high fructose corn syrup.

- Peach-Mango: Pear puree concentrate, water, pumpkin juice concentrate, peach puree concentrate, pear juice concentrate, carrot juice concentrate, carrot puree, mango puree concentrate, natural flavors, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), citric acid.

- Blueberry: Pear puree concentrate, water, pumpkin juice concentrate, pear juice concentrate, natural flavors, carrot puree, blueberry puree concentrate, fruit and vegetable extracts for color, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), citric acid.

Simply Fruit Varieties:

- Apple Cinnamon: Pear puree concentrate, water, apple puree concentrate, pear juice concentrate, natural flavors, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), cinnamon, malic acid.

- Mixed Berry: Pear puree concentrate, water, pear juice concentrate, natural flavors, strawberry puree, red raspberry puree concentrate, blueberry puree concentrate, fruit and vegetable extracts for color, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), malic acid.

- Strawberry: Pear puree concentrate, water, pear juice concentrate, strawberry puree concentrate, natural flavors, carmine, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), malic acid.

Also to kick off the school year, Del Monte launched the “First Day of School Photo Contest” through Facebook (facebook.com/delmonte)! The contest is closed now, but everyone was invited to upload an original photo of your child on their first day of school or yourself on your own first day of school. The top 20 Finalist photos were posted to the Del Monte Fruit Squeezers website, and fans had the chance to vote for their favorite photo. The winning entry will receive a $10,000 donation to a school of their choice!

Menu Plan Monday

And, we're off...for another crazy week. Sunday was a chilly night and we curled up to watch movies separately as a family...one for the girls and one for the boys. We were granted a bit of a reprieve, when the soccer game that was scheduled for Monday night was cancelled late on Sunday. We quickly filled it back up with other things. In fact, we went to a new FroYo place that opened in town and was celebrating with $1 cups of frozen yogurt and toppings. It was a nice treat. The rest of the week is filled with sports and then my niece's birthday.

Sunday
cereal
Chipotle
leftovers and popcorn

Monday
Braised Short Ribs

Tuesday
Chicken Ceasar Salad and Oreo Cream Cheese Cookies (for my birthday)

Wednesday
Chicken Gravy Over Biscuits

Thursday
Chipotle Chicken

Friday
Pork Chops

Saturday
cereal
sandwiches
Mexican food

During the week, breakfast is usually a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. Lunches are either the hot lunch from school or packed lunches for the kids. My husband and I have leftovers, frozen meals or sandwiches.

CVS Deals - 9/15 & 18

Well, I did actually make it to CVS last week, just like I planned and then when I got a $3 ECB offer in my inbox, I sent my husband back for a second trip.

9/15 transaction
1 - Alive Vitamins
1 - Sunkist Soda
3 - Dawn DishSoap
2 - Kellogg's Special K Cereals

-$2 Alive mfg coupon
-$.30 Sunkist CRT
-$1 Kellogg's Special K IP
-$1 Kellogg's Special K IP

Paid with $10 ECB and $4.80 OOP ($3.90 + $.90 tax). Earned $1 and $1 ECB.

9/18 transaction (no pic)
3 - Coke Brand 12 pks

-$3 ECB (inbox offer)

Total $6 plus tax OOP. Not a great deal, but the $2/12 pk is really the price point I want to hit when buying soda and it seems harder to come by, so since I had 'free' ECBs to use, I figured it was a good way to use them.

Did you get to CVS last week? What did you get?

$50 Sunoco Gift Card Giveaway!

*No compensation was received for this post. All opinions expressed are my own or that of my family.
Summer might be over (can you believe that tomorrow is the first day of fall?), but that doesn't mean that you can't still plan a special getaway. Whether a staycation or a vacation, time away with family is a great thing - especially, now that the kids are in school and more busy - those getaways, whether near or far, are a great chance to bond with the family. Some of my favorite memories and stories come from vacations.

Are you planning a getaway? We are planning a getaway to a nearby indoor water park and then a family vacation later this fall. One of the ways that we plan for our vacation is to stock up on gift cards for places along the way or at our destination - food, gas, etc. We both purchase the cards with redeemed points through loyalty programs and use the purchase of the gift cards to earn other rewards.
Sunoco gas gift cards can be used for any kind of purchase at any Sunoco station, APlus convenience store, and Ultra Service Center. Gasoline gift cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 denominations. Make your gas gift card last longer with discounts on gas using your APlus Rewards card.

You can learn more about their gas gift cards here and find the locations on your route (or in your neighborhood) here.

Menu Plan Monday

Well, it feels official...Fall has settled in. Sure it was 90 a couple of days last week, but now there is that chill in the house. I closed a few more windows, not quite ready to consider if I need to put on the heat, but wanting to make sure that the chill doesn't take over the house. It makes me ready to return to soups and chilis and roasts and other warm the kitchen and the belly type foods, but unfortunately a busy week does not lend itself well to those type of meals...so I will consider them for Saturday or next week.

Sunday
cereal
sandwiches
Enchilada Pasta

Monday
French Bread Pizza (we bought bread in the interest of time, but I like to use my homemade French bread)

Tuesday
Pork Chops and Mashed Potatoes

Wednesday
Chipotle Chicken and Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake (modeled after my pumpkin swirl cheesecake) - for the birthday boy, my husband

Thursday
Pierogies and Eggs

Friday
TBD

Saturday
Braised Short Ribs (had this out last week and really want to try it at home, Saturday feels like a good day)

During the week, breakfast is usually a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. Lunches are either the hot lunch from school or packed lunches for the kids. My husband and I have leftovers, frozen meals or sandwiches.

Baked Wonton Cheese Sticks

No compensation received for this post. Complimentary packages of Frigo Cheese Heads string cheese were provided. All opinions expressed are my own or that of my family.

Now that the kids are back to school, there seems to be more snacking occasions than normal. They seem to come home from school hungry for a snack, which works out well on days when we have sports and can't eat until after. Of course, on those days, I find myself grabbing a snack to go too! Then, there are the evenings, after the kids are in bed and I am looking for a little something to nibble on with a glass of wine, as I relax, wind down from the crazy day and watch a show.

I don't know about your house, but at our house, string cheese is a favorite snack. Personally, I am a fan of cheese of all forms and find it to be a satisfying snack. I feel good providing string cheese to the kids because I feel it is a reasonably healthy option - the pack I have at home right now is only 80 calories per serving and provides 6 g of protein and some calcium. I don't know that the kids think of it as a healthy snack, but I know that they think that it is fun to eat as they tear off string after string.

As America’s Favorite String Cheese, Frigo® Cheese Heads® String Cheese is:
- Perfect for school lunches and after school snacks
- High in calcium and a good source of protein
- Individually wrapped for wholesome and fun snacking on-the-go
- Easy to use in recipes the entire family will enjoy

Typically, I think of string cheese as a stand alone snack or an accompaniment to a bowl of crackers. But last weekend, as we geared up for the official start of football season, we decided that it would be nice to have a little snack while we watched the games. We had had our fill of chips the prior day as hosts of the fantasy football draft, so I decided that I could use string cheese as an easy way to enjoy baked cheese. I decided that breading them and trying to fry/bake them would likely turn into a mess, but figured that wrapping them up in wontons would allow us a way to have baked cheese with less mess. When I suggested the snack and started to pull out the ingredients, both of the kids were anxious to help, so I let them help me roll them up and took over when it came to bake.

Baked Wonton Cheese Sticks

Wonton Wrappers
String Cheese
Oil
bowl of water

Open the string cheese and cut each piece into three equal sections. Place on the wonton wrappers and roll up like an egg roll, using the water to wet the edges to help the wrapper seal.

Place the wrapped cheese in a skillet with oil, over medium heat. Turn until browned.

Place the cheese sticks into an oven safe glass dish and bake for 10-12 minutes at 375.

Serve with a side of marinara.

Everyone liked the baked wonton cheese sticks and agreed that we should definitely make them again.

No compensation was received for this post. Complimentary packages of Frigo Cheese Heads string cheese were provided for the purpose of sharing. All opinions expressed are my own or that of my family.

T-fal Stainless Steel Cookware with Thermospot review #CookingPlanit

As you may know, I have been using a new set of T-fal Stainless Steel with Thermospot cookware for the past few weeks, as a participant in the Cooking Planit T-fal Cookware giveaway promotion. (You can enter to win your own 12-pc set - find the giveaway here.)
(my handles are black plastic, not red silicone)

Growing up, my mom had a set of cookware that was stainless steel and it was what I was most familiar with, but back when my husband and I were registering for our wedding, we had selected a hard anodized cookware set. I had chosen the set based on the feedback of a friend, who considered herself a bit of a home-gourmet. I loved to cook and figured that it was the right set for me. I have generally liked the set, but with it being anodized aluminum, I started to notice that the bottoms of the pans were discoloring with use and was frustrated by the skillets not being non-stick. I found the cookware to be heavy and the handles were always getting hot (I had handle covers, but didn't use them like I should).

I have really enjoyed trying out the T-fal Stainless Steel with Thermospot cookware. I like that the pans are oven safe to 350F (the ones with the plastic handles), the skillets are non-stick and feature Thermospot - which indicates when the pan is "preheated to the optimal temperature", and the pans have a built in measuring guide.
I also really like that the handles are plastic covered, so that they are easier (cooler) to handle than my old pans. They are also lighter than my old set of pans, which makes it easier to lift the pans to slide out the food or to drain.

This combination of features (lightweight, non-stick surface and plastic covered handles) allowed my son to make his own scrambled eggs the other day, while I watched closely over him to make sure he didn't hurt himself, burn the food or drop it on the floor when transferring to a plate.

I have also found that the set has the right combination of pans to fit most of my dinner preparation needs. Whether I am making hot dogs and corn on the cob or making my Cincinnati chili with pasta, chili and beans, there seems to be a pan that will fit my needs.

I like the steam vents that are built into the glass lids. It allows me to keep my food covered while cooking and (at least so far) prevents it from boiling over. I also really like that the lids are glass, so I can see inside. My old cookware had solid lids, which meant more lid lifting during cooking (and they got hot too).

The cookware has been easy to clean. I continue to clean it by hand, but the pans are dishwasher safe (I'm assuming that the non-stick is not).

I am happy with my new set of pans and have already cleared out my old pans to make room in my cupboard for the new cookware. I would recommend the cookware based on my experience with them.

No compensation was received for this post. As a participant in the Cooking Planit T-fal Giveaway, I was provided with a set of pans to use and share my experience with my readers. All opinions expressed are entirely my own or that of my family.

Parmesan-Crusted Tilapia, Roasted Asparagus with Parmesan and Twice-Baked Potatoes - Cooking Planit review

Tonight for dinner, we tried out some new recipes. Not only did we try new recipes, I tried this really cool website/app called Cooking Planit. You may recall that a few months ago that I shared about Cooking Planit and you may recall that soon I will be hosting a T-Fal Cookware giveaway courtesy of Cooking Planit (the full list of participating blogs is located below, so you can check it out and enter to win on several blogs). Tonight though, I want to share with you about my experience with Cooking Planit.

What is Cooking Planit?

Cooking Planit has a website featuring many recipes and meals (the photography is great and makes me want to try a lot of the recipes). Cooking Planit is also available as a free app for your iPad or iPhone, so you can plan on the run - who hasn't been at the store trying to make an adjustment to the meal plan because there is a great deal on something. Think of Cooking Planit as your very own Personal Kitchen Assistant! Cooking Planit is an app perfect for a home cook at any skill level. Cooking Planit walks you through the whole cooking process and keeps you on track so dinner get’s on the table on time!

• Simplified Meal Planning - choose 'pre-set' meals or choose a few recipes that you want to try.
• Build your menu and it will put together your shopping list.
• Guided Cooking Steps, it even helps align all of your dishes so that they finish at the same time (I know I could use that when I host a Thanksgiving or other group meal)
• Cloud Sync – Sync your account across the web, your iPhone and iPad

I started by setting up an account on Cooking Planit's website and then downloaded the app for the iPhone and the iPad.

As I sat on my sofa watching TV one evening, I was browsing through the pre-set meals on the iPad. I bookmarked a couple of the meals as I scanned and then switched over to scanning and marking some of the recipes. I decided that to really check it out Cooking Planit and all it has to offer, I wanted to go with my own custom meal.

So, yesterday, as I was planning my menu for the week, I sat down at my computer and did some additional searches, bookmarking more recipes. Then, I looked over the recipes that I had bookmarked to decide what would go best together and what was different than what we normally ate. I decided on Parmesan-Crusted Tilapia, Roasted Asparagus with Parmesan and Twice-Baked Potatoes.

After building the meal and saving it, I decided to check out one of the features of Cooking Planit - I created my shopping list for my meal.
I love that I was able to create and save my meal on my computer and then access my account from my phone to create a portable shopping list. After the grocery list is generated, you can add additional items to your list, indicating section of the store and get a complete grocery list. In addition, you can mark off the items that you have and update the list to only show those that you don't have. I did that and then also used the check boxes to mark the groceries as I moved through the store.

Fast forward to tonight, it was time to prepare my dinner. I pulled the app up on my iPad and set it upon the easel in the kitchen. I then selected my meal on the app and it pulled up on the screen, ready to go.
Once on my screen, it gave me a list of ingredients and tools that were needed, some information about prepping and cook time (mine was actually shorter...I cheated and microwaved the potatoes to prep them and used ready bacon!). I really like how it lists out the ingredient and tools. The ingredients are the total amount needed for all of the recipes and the tools let you know what type of equipment (measuring spoons, slotted spoon, baking sheet), appliances (oven and stove top), and supplies will be used (paper towels). When you select start, the app asks how many servings you would like to prepare - 2, 4 or 6. Of course, if you choose an alternate number of servings the ingredients you had seen on the first page are no longer what you need. Never fear though, because the next page will tell you the ingredients you need to gather for prepping and the quantities for each recipe. Then, it steps you through the preparation of your recipes, so that they all finish at the same time.
On each step, it lets you know what ingredients you will need and what to do. You can either swipe you finger to advance pages or put it on audio controls, allowing you to use your voice to flip the pages. As you step through, you have the option to see the next few steps - I found that looking ahead gave me perspective of what was coming and allowed me to adjust where I needed (you know for the microwave or the ready bacon). When you get to a step where there is time until you start the next step, it suggests things such as clean up a little or (my favorite) enjoy a glass of wine or your favorite beverage. When there are cooking or sauteing steps, when you advance the page, it automatically starts a little timer that will pop up on the screen when it is complete and have you check that the item is done - if it is, you dismiss the timer, if not, you can select adjust and it will run a timer for a few additional minutes.

Everything made its way into the oven and soon it was dinner time:
My family very much so enjoyed the meal that I had prepared. It was full of flavor and yet, part of the beauty, to me, was the simplicity of the meal. There were few ingredients, but they paired well.

I'm ready to build another meal and try out even more of the recipes that Cooking Planit has to offer.

You can sign up for Cooking Planit on their website or you can down load their app at iTunes. There are both free and paid versions of the app, so you can try it risk free and then upgrade for even more features.

Don't forget to check out the matrix of bloggers participating in the giveaway and be sure to come back tomorrow, when my giveaway goes live!

Menu Plan Monday

What a wonderful weekend! Nothing spectacular, it just was a weekend and that is enough for me. I was able to get a good amount of things done around the house, watch each of my children play sports, host a play date for my daughter and a fantasy football draft for my husband, took the kids out to dinner at Steak 'n Shake (love their kids eat free promo...before we decided to splurge on dessert, my dinner total was $3.93 for the three of us to enjoy a satisfying dinner), and took care of returns and grocery shopping.

The week ahead is reasonably busy, but in spite of that, we are trying some new recipes this week. Of course, there are some familiar favorites on the menu too! If we like the recipes that we are trying, I will make sure to share them.

Sunday
cereal
pizza or sandwiches
Cincinnati Style Chili

Monday
Parmesan-Crusted Tilapia and Roasted Asparagus with Parmesan (new)

Tuesday
Chicken Patty Sandwiches or leftovers

Wednesday
Turkey Roast

Thursday
Pasta

Friday
Baked Swiss Chicken and Rice (new)

Saturday
cereal
sandwiches
dinner with friends

During the week, breakfast is usually a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. Lunches are either the hot lunch from school or packed lunches for the kids. My husband and I have leftovers, frozen meals or sandwiches.

Discover Fall in Hartville: Quail's Covey Bed & Breakfast visit

No compensation was received for this post. We were provided with lunch and apple dumplings by Quail's Covey, as a participant in the Discover Hartville in the Fall Blog Tour. All opinions expressed are my own or that of my family.

My family and I have lived in Northeast Ohio for over eleven years. There are many places that have been on our list of places to go, but for whatever reason, we never seem to find (or make) the time to head out and explore all that the area offers. Often times, it is a special event that brings us to finally explore a destination that we have been intending to see.

Hartville, Ohio is one of those places that we have been meaning to go. My husband had talked about visiting the Hartville Marketplace and Flea Market and we have always heard good things about Hartville Hardware, but our travels had not yet taken us to this quaint community with so much to offer, just miles from Akron and Canton (about 17 and 12 respectively). When we were invited to participate in the Discover Hartville in the Fall as part of a blog tour, we jumped at the chance.

Our destination: Quail's Covey Bed and Breakfast; but it was not our first stop. We decided to extend our visit by turning lunch into a full day in Hartville. We first paid a visit to Hartville Marketplace and Flea Market. It was a lot of fun exploring the different permanent vendors inside the building, as well as all of those that had set up shop for the weekend in the outdoor area. Whether you are looking for baseball cards, books, toys, clothes, fresh produce, fresh made pastas, meats or cheese, you are sure to find what you are looking for at the Marketplace and Flea Market.

Our next stop was Quail's Covey Bed and Breakfast, where we were treated to a wonderful lunch made by Charlotte (she asks to be called "Charlie") and served by her and her husband John. As we drove from downtown out into the countryside to the Bed and Breakfast, we passed a golf course and saw signs for Quail Hollow State Park. We found Quail's Covey, a beautiful Tudor home that was built by John for his family over a quarter of a century ago, at the end of a long tree lined drive. The large back yard is surrounded by trees that are part of the Quail Hollow State Park. It is so quiet and serene. In front of the house is a large stocked pond that John added to the property. The dirt that was excavated was used to create a rolling landscape that includes a waterfall feature on the side of the home.

As you enter the home through the front door, there is a sense of welcome and you almost at once feel completely at home. Even my husband, who normally would have felt awkward, commented after our visit how completely at ease he was. Charlie and John, were wonderful hosts and they made us feel very welcome in their home.

We sat down in their sun room to enjoy our wonderful lunch. Charlotte and John didn't eat, but they did sit with us and visit. The meal started with a salad of greens, dried cranberries and croutons, topped with a delicious raspberry vinaigrette. There was also a basket full of soft, warm homemade bread that my daughter complimented by saying it was as good as my homemade bread. Our main course was a delicious baked chicken - drumsticks for the kids and chicken breasts for us. It was served with mashed potatoes topped with gravy that included bits of chicken in it and delicious green beans from their garden that were prepared with cheese. I had never had green beans prepared with cheese and they were delicious. As we ate, we visited and learned more about Quail's Covey.

John had grown up across the way and as a child, had imagined a house in the spot where the house now sits. They actually bought the grey house next door, before purchasing the land upon which John built the Tudor style home that is very similar to the house he had imagined. The house was built for their family and was only turned into a bed and breakfast about 6 years ago.

The main floor features the great room, where guests can gather and watch TV, play games, read a book, and relax by the fireplace. Next to the great room is a dining room that opens up to the great room.
sun room
Also on the main floor is a beautiful sun room that looks out over the back of the property. (It's here where we enjoyed our lunch.) The kitchen, where Charlie makes up the homemade evening dessert and the breakfast each morning (both included with your stay), is next to the sun room and right off of the great room. Off of the kitchen is the family's private quarters which includes a bedroom, living space and bathroom. The back of the house features a nice deck that overlooks the large backyard. On it are several tables for gathering and a few hummingbird feeders. From the deck, you can watch the deer, see hikers and bikers on the trails at the adjacent Quail Hollow State Park, hear the soothing sounds of the waterfall and just generally relax in the peacefulness of it all.

The primary accommodations for the Bed and Breakfast are upstairs.
Dogwood Suite
The spacious former master bedroom is now the Dogwood Suite and includes a king-size bed, sitting area, jacuzzi tub and a private deck that overlooks the pond, which is graced by the resident swans. The wood detail on the ceiling is beautiful. The other two rooms upstairs are the Woodland Room and the Queen Ann Room. They both include a queen-size bed and share the hall bath. The Woodland Room includes a private deck. They did note that they typically will only rent one of the rooms, unless the guests know each other, since they do share a hallway bath.

The basement features a second kitchen, a large common space with a bar and pool table and a couple of bedrooms. This space is sometimes rented out as an apartment for extended stays. The steps up from the basement feature a wall that has been papered with shopping bags, it may sound strange, but it really is a neat looking finish.

After taking a tour of the house and grounds, we returned to the sun room for dessert. We were treated to homemade apple dumplings a la mode and a cup of coffee. The apple dumplings were so delicious! They made me think that I should make some at home soon. As we enjoyed our apple dumplings it began to rain outside. This disappointed the kids who were looking forward to visiting the three donkeys that are also kept on property (they're named Jack, Jill and Down the Hill). We learned that the donkeys help keep the wild animals away from the swans (George and Gracie).

As we enjoyed our dessert and coffee, we continued to visit with Charlie and John. It felt like we had known them for years instead of just an hour. We learned that every morning, Charlie prepares a tray with fresh squeezed juice and scones for the guests and leaves it at their door. Then, when they come downstairs for breakfast, they are treated to more of her wonderful cooking in the form of a homemade breakfast. There are several meals that she rotates through as choices for her guests at breakfast including french toast casserole, pancakes and omelets. She shared how they have several tables at which guests can dine so that they can eat on their own. It is not uncommon, however, for guests to ultimately wind up sitting together. In addition to their home cooked breakfast, guests are also treated to dessert each evening. On a request basis, they will prepare and serve dinner too.

We talked about how Quail's Covey has played host to a few small weddings over the years. When we asked where the majority of their guests arrive from, Charlie & John indicated that guests come from as close as Hartville, looking for a getaway, and as far away as Europe. People who stay at Quail's Covey come just to visit the Hartville area (for the shops, flea market, golf courses and more) and some are newlyweds who choose to stay on their honeymoon. Some come to town for the Football Hall of Fame, and others are traveling on business.

As we wrapped up our delicious apple dumplings, John took out his German accordion and began to play for us. My daughter wouldn't get up and dance, but she did sit in her chair moving to the rhythm. The rain outside began to lighten and we decided that although we were having a wonderful visit, it was time for us to go and allow Charlie and John to get ready for an evening picnic that was planned with their children and grandchildren.

From Quail's Covey we headed over to Maize Valley Winery, where we sampled some local wines and chose a few to buy, then to Hartville Collectibles and lastly to the Hartville Chocolate Factory, which was closed, before heading home.

We agreed that we would not wait so long to plan another visit to Hartville and check out more of what the community has to offer.

Whether you are visiting from out of the area and need a place to stay or you are local simply looking for a getaway night or weekend, I would recommend checking out Quail's Covey Bed and Breakfast. You're sure to love the setting, the rooms, the food the proprietors, and the overall experience that comes with a stay at a Bed and Breakfast.

If you want to learn more about Quail's Covey or if you'd like to book a stay, check out their website for more details.

Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin

A few weeks back, I had the opportunity to be at the bookstore by myself. I love the bookstore, always have. The store had sent an e-mail with a coupon for 15% off any book, which I saw as an open invitation to visit. I resisted the urge to buy a beverage from the coffee and went to browse through the fiction section, looking for some of my favorites, but was surprised to not find much selection. They had books by my authors (mostly), but it seemed that in many cases, I had read all of the books by those authors that they had on hand. I was a little bummed by this realization. Now, I know that they will order in any book that is available in their vast catalog, but it isn't the same. I realize that with so many new books being released all the time, that you just can't keep a copy of every book - it would be an unwise decision from a financial perspective, but I was disappointed just the same (I'm not required to be logical in my disappointments).

On a plus side, this seeming lack of selection, resulted in me finding a new author. After not finding what I was looking for, I went and started to browse the tables and the stacks of books located there - more eye catching than browsing the shelves and only seeing the spines of the books. As I wandered, I came across the book - Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. The summary of the book on the back hooked me in and I selected it as the book I would use my coupon for...it helped that it was also on the bargain table. I also learned that it had been made into a movie. Now that I have read the book, I really want to see the movie too.

The main character in the book is Rachel White and is set the summer that she turns 30 and her lifelong friend Darcy is planning an end of summer wedding. Darcy and Rachel grew up together on a cul-de-sac in Indiana and now, both live in NYC. Darcy has always been the pretty one, the lucky one, the one that always seemed to get her way. Rachel went to law school with Darcy's fiance and was the one to introduce them. The irony is that she introduced them because she didn't think that he could possibly have been interested in her. When they were out for her thirtieth birthday and Darcy left early after drinking too much, she learns that Dex is attracted to her. As the summer progresses, their relationship continues and Rachel begins to struggle with deciding what is right and wrong and choosing between her heart and her conscience.

The author does a great job developing the characters. Not only did I have an image of what each of them looked like and their mannerisms, but I felt like I could really relate to them. I found myself frustrated with Darcy's seemingly charmed life and rooting for things to end happily for Rachel. And, when the book ended, I found myself wanting to know what happens next. It appears that Something Blue picks up where this one ends, only based on the synopsis it appears that the main character is Darcy - I just hope that it also includes more about Rachel and what happens to her. I think that I will have to pick that one up (once I conquer my current stack of five books that I have to read!).

I recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a good book to read. I look forward to reading more of Emily Giffin's books in the future. So, although I was disappointed that the bookstore didn't have any books I haven't read by my usual authors, it all worked out, because I now have one more author that I enjoy reading and that many more books to fill my days with.

No compensation was received for this post. I bought my own book and enjoyed it.
