Better Breakfast Month

Did you know that September is Better Breakfast Month. As the school year gets underway, Better Breakfast Month is meant to serve as a reminder for you to stay focused on healthy breakfast eating habits. I'm sure you have all heard at least once that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

There are many reasons why this statement holds true:
"The typical person spends eight hours asleep each night with no food or water. By the time you wake up, your body is dehydrated and you have little energy to start your day off with. According to BetterBreakfast.org, breakfast can also help you lose weight. Without breakfast to get the metabolism going again, hte body stays at the lower level of metabolism, burning fewer calories then if it had breakfast. If you skip your morning meal, you tend to eat more throughout the day and the foods are usually unhealthy and high in calories. An individual who fueled up for their day with breakfast can wait until lunch to eat with energy to spare."

At our house, most days our breakfast is cereal and milk. Some days the kids might add some fruit or yogurt or toast or swap it up with oatmeal. We love breakfast foods, in fact, we have breakfast for dinner on a regular basis.

Usually, the reason is because we perceive a hot breakfast as something that takes too much time. But, with proper planning, it can be achievable - at least on occasion.

One easy to make meal is a breakfast sandwich - not only is it quick, but it is easy to take on the go too! Place an English muffin in the toaster. Using a small microwaveable bowl, spray with some cooking spray and add an egg. Using a fork, puncture the white and the yolk one time. Then cover and microwave for 45 seconds. Start with the bottom of your muffin, add a slice of cheese, add the egg, add a slice of Hormel Natural Ham or a couple pieces of Hormel Microwave Ready Bacon and top with the other half of the muffin. This is so easy, that I often take it for lunch!

National Corned Beef Hash Day!

I am really starting to think that there is a National day for everything! Today, just so happens to be Corned Beef Hash Day. I happen to be a fan of Corned Beef Hash, especially when it is prepared crispy (prefer my bacon crispy too).

I am not really sure when I first had corned beef hash, but I do recall having corned beef and noodles as a kid. I associate corned beef hash with breakfast and generally, it is a 'treat' that I only have on occasion when we are out to eat. Surprisingly, it is not on the breakfast menu at many breakfast places, or at least not that I have seen.

I have been known to have breakfast for dinner, but I also have it for lunch sometimes. In fact, there is a greasy spoon near where I work and they make a really great corned beef hash and do a good job of getting the corned beef crispy like I like. Typically, I enjoy it with two over medium eggs (you know - white is cooked through, but the yolk is still dippy style) and sour dough toast.

Are you familiar with Corned Beef Hash? Hash is a culinary term for a mixture of foods that have been finely chopped or diced. As the name would suggest, corned beef hash has corned beef and diced potatoes.

I was excited to find that it is available at my local grocery store. In fact, Hormel offers three varieties - Roast Beef Hash, Corned Beef Hash and Reduced Fat Corned Beef Hash. It lets me get my fix at home - and is usually how I fit corned beef into my St Patrick's Day meal plan.

Do you enjoy corned beef hash? How do you eat it?

Progresso Light Crème Soup - a giveaway

I don't know about where you are, but here it is definitely starting to feel like fall. I didn't want to, but the other day I gave in and turned on the heat...I just had to get that chill out of the air. It is still 'on' but I have it set at 64, just warm enough to keep it from getting cold in the house.

Days like this really make me start to switch gears on the type of foods and drinks that I have. It makes me ready for piping bowls of chili, roasts that cook for hours in the oven, apple desserts, hot tea and soup. With the exception of Cincinnati style chili, many of these foods simply aren't things that I think about in the summer. So, the fall is like a time to welcome these foods back into the menu.

Of course, there seems to be a richness to many of the foods that I enjoy in the winter, the so called comfort foods. This is not a good thing when you are trying to watch what you eat. It is nice to know that there are lighter options out there that can let me enjoy the comfort foods of fall, with a little less worry.

"With two new creamy flavors, Progresso Light soups are giving those who are managing their weight a new reason to celebrate! At 100 calories per serving, now you can indulge in warm, creamy soups like Light Creamy Potato with Bacon and Cheese* and Light Chicken Pot Pie Style* without feeling guilty. Packed with indulgent, satisfying flavor, these two new Light creamy soups are the perfect way to make thoughtful eating decisions without sacrificing incredible taste.
- These two new Progresso Light creamy soups are joining the lineup of more than 40 flavorful soups that are 100 calories or less per serving
- These Weight Watchers® endorsed soups have 100 calories and a 2 PointsPlus® value per serving
- The Creamy Potato with Bacon & Cheese variety boasts pieces of potato with savory bacon and rich cheese flavor
- The Chicken Pot Pie Style variety exudes a home-style essence with cuts of white-meat chicken, hearty potatoes and classic vegetables

*Light Chicken Pot Pie Style: At least 33% fewer calories than regular ready-to-serve soups. Light Creamy Potato with Bacon & Cheese: 50% fewer calories than the leading potato, cheese, and bacon ready-to serve soup. See nutrition information for sodium content.

Menu Plan Monday

It is hard to believe it is fall. Time seems to pass by so quickly. Last week was no exception, we were on vacation, which was awesome, but felt like it was almost over before it started. Yesterday was a crazy, busy sports day with a soccer game, baseball game and two softball games. We didn't have much time to fit in grocery shopping, so we did a divide and conquer trip at Walmart to get some essentials, but will be eating from the freezer and pantry for the most part. We had to get out to get juice and some fresh fruit, some yogurt and a few missing ingredients for this week's menu.

Fall sports are starting to wind down, but we are still pretty busy with them this week, so it is a good thing that there are a several easy to prepare (or already prepared and just need to be heated) meals available to us.

Sunday
Cereal
Macaroni and Cheese
Cincinnati Style Chili

Monday
Homemade Pizza

Tuesday
Coney Dogs

Wednesday
Southwest Three Cheese Chicken

Thursday
Lime Glazed Shrimp and Pineapple kebobs

Friday
Dinner out with Friends

Saturday
cereal
sandwiches
Turkey Roast

Breakfast is cereal or oatmeal each morning. Lunch for the kids is either the school lunch or usually a couple of times a week they pack. Lunch for my husband and me is typically sandwiches, frozen meals or leftovers.

Natual Looking Make-up

I don't wear much make-up. Never have. I had the foundation I bought for my wedding for several years and finally threw it away because it was so old. So, when I do wear make-up, I don't want it to look like I'm wearing make-up - I want to make sure that it looks natural.

I achieve this by choosing neutral colors. I choose a blush that is a light pinky-peach color, that mimics the natural coloration visible in my cheeks after playing hard. I choose a lip color that is a deep pink type of color - something that doesn't stand out.

When it comes to foundation, I learned a trick a few years ago that helps me achieve a natural, dewy appearance. I apply my lotion and foundation at the same time. I put five dots of each on my face - forehead, each cheek, nose and chin. Then, I smooth it all in. I find that the lotion helps me achieve a thin, even coverage with the foundation and having the lotion blended it gives it that dewy look. I don't remember who taught me this trick, but I find that I am able to succeed at a natural looking appearance when I apply it this way.

Menu Plan Monday

Another busy week has come and gone. It amazes me sometimes, just how quickly time really does fly. We had a very dry summer, but lately we have had more rain. Unfortunately, we have had two baseball games and one soccer game cancelled as a result. Hopefully, we will get in the three games we have this week.

The refrigerator and pantry seem to overrun with a bunch of this and that, so this week we are eating from the pantry and fridge to use up some stuff. I would like to get the fridge fairly empty so that I can give it a good wipe down without having to move a bunch of stuff around. This includes the freezer above my refrigerator too. My deep freeze will be next, I think it might need to be defrosted soon. So, I would like to work my way through it as well.

Sunday
Bagels with cream cheese
Leftovers
Chicken Wontons (like Buffalo Chicken Rolls without the cabbage)

Monday
Eggs and Toast, with Sausage and Pierogies

Tuesday
Homemade Pizza

Wednesday
Enchiladas with Salsa Rice

Thursday
Chicken Patty Sandwiches

Friday
Chicken and Dumplings

Saturday
TBD

Breakfast is cereal or oatmeal each morning. Lunch for the kids is either the school lunch or usually a couple of times a week they pack. Lunch for my husband and me is typically sandwiches, frozen meals or leftovers.

Imagination Movers

We have been fans of the Imagination Movers at my house for just over 3 years now. My husband first read about them in a magazine and we started to DVR the show for the kids to watch. When they came to town for a show that fall, we decided to take the kids to see them. It was a great show and the kids enjoyed dancing in the aisle. Since then, we have attended two other shows - the whole family attended one and my husband and daughter the next one.

If you are not familiar with the Movers, you can check out their website or read this article that I wrote back in 2010 when we were still sort of new to the Movers.

If you are familiar, then you will be excited to hear that they are coming back in concert starting September 21st. Unfortunately for us, their tour is not bringing them to our area this fall - but we did see them in April, so that is probably why.

As the kids are getting older, we listen to a wider variety of music, but we always come back to the Movers. We may go a few days of listening to pop music and then someone will ask for "First Day of School" or "Give Me Your Hand" - two of our favorite songs on our Movers' play list.

You can learn more about the Imagination Movers on their website and reach out to them through Twitter and Facebook.

See the Imagination Movers Live in Concert

Family favorites Imagination Movers kick off the second leg of a massive 2012 North
American tour on September 21st in Jacksonville, Florida. The tour begins after brand-new episodes of The Movers’ Emmy Award-winning show started airing on Disney’s new Disney Jr. Channel.

Razor + Tie released The Movers’ ‘Rock-O-Matic’ album this year. The CD/DVD package
features the band’s most irresistible songs to date, live-action and animated music videos, skits that recall old-school Movers comedy heroes like Monty Python and the Monkees and the high-energy hijinks for which The Movers are famous.

Head over to ZooGlobble to watch the fun music video for standout-track “Everybody Sing”:

Since they partnered in 2003, Rich Collins, Scott Durbin, Dave Poche and Scott "Smitty” Smith have grown from a New Orleans-based band to a worldwide brand by creating music that kids and grownups can enjoy together. The blue-suited Movers have earned millions of fans (including Conan O'Brien, Chris Rock and Nia Vardalos) with their combination of danceable power pop songs, catchy choruses, a knack for inspiring audience participation and a heaping helping of onstage silliness.

The Emmy-winning Imagination Movers are bringing their high-energy rock concert for
families to a theater near you! The Disney Junior stars (Rich, Scott, Dave and Smitty) thrill audiences by combining catchy power-pop songs with a knack for inspiring audience participation as well as a healthy dose of onstage silliness inspired by the Movers' real-life experiences as fathers of young kids. This is live musical event that will truly engage the littlest of kids along with their older siblings, parents and grandparents.

CVS Deals - 9/3

I headed out to CVS today to pick up a few things. I had a 25% off coupon and knew that only a few things would be eligible for the discount. I noticed that they have their cereal cups at 10/$10. I thought that at 75c a piece, it would be good to have a few on hand. But, not only is their regular price 10/$10, so is their sale price, so they weren't eligible. I wasn't very excited about that - I skipped them. The shelf tag says the 'sale' is through 9/8, so hopefully they will just be 10/$10 regular price when I get another coupon.

I had read online that some stores had the small cans of the Gillette shave gel on the deal. I saw in the shave gel aisle that the small can of the shave gel for men was included, but priced at $2.37. The small cans for women were only $1.67 and located in the sample/travel row - they were not included. I bought and returned one, just to see.

I also bought some toothbrushes that my daughter wanted (the first of five nice things I did for her), but they were considered on sale too - even though there was no sale tag. I went ahead and bought them, despite the non-'sale' that they were part of (turns out that they are on a deal if you buy 2 or more, but I only bought 1). Although, it may have actually give me the 25% - I can't make the math work otherwise.
Transaction #1
2 - Scrubbing Bubbles Cleaner
1 - Fantastik Cleaner
1 - Shout Liquid Treatment Spray
2 - Mio Water Enhancer
3 - Halloween Cards
1 - Wisk Laundry Detergent

-$1 $1/2 Scrubbing Bubbles Mfg coupon
-$.75 Fantastik Cleaner Mfg coupon
-$3 Shout (Free) Mfg coupon
-$1 Mio IP
-$1 Mio IP
-$.99 B2G1 Card CRT
-$2 Wisk Mfg coupon
-$2.11 25% CVS e-mail coupon

Paid with $4, $10 and $1 ECB and $6.17 OOP ($4.40 plus tax). Earned $4 and $1 ECB. My Free Shout coupon was expiring, so I thought that it made sense to take advantage of the ECB offer to maximize my savings. It made each of the four items on the deal $.81 after coupons and ECB. I had that coupon for the Wisk that was expiring later this month, so I decided that $2.99 after coupons was a pretty good deal for the detergent.

Dropps Fabric Softener Pacs

I've been doing my own laundry since high school and a family worth of laundry for several years now. In my experience, adding fabric softener to the wash provides me with the softest clothes, as well as giving the laundry a nice fresh, scent. Using dryer sheets is great for combating static and imparting a nice, fresh scent on the clothes.

For me, the biggest challenge with liquid fabric softener, since I am usually multi-tasking or starting a load of laundry before I head out for my morning walk/run, is catching the rinse. I have tried devices that are meant to release your fabric softener in the spin cycle - really a clever device taking advantage of centrifugal force if you ask the engineer in me. They work really well and allowed me to use fabric softener in my wash, but I felt like I needed to replace them too frequently because there would become a build up inside. I am not sure if it was fabric softener that wasn't released or lint or a bit of both, but it got sort of ookey after a while.

A while back, I was offered the opportunity to try the new Dropps fabric softener pacs. They have a great fresh scent - the bag that I tried is Orange Blossom. The product is useable in all washers, including high efficiency style and all temperatures.

They are so convenient and easy to use. Similar to the Dropps detergent pacs, you simply toss them in at the start of the load. No need to catch the rinse cycle. I have been pleased with the experience. I feel that my clothes have been softer than they were when I was not using any fabric softener and the fresh scent stays with the clothes. As with any of the pacs, you need to make sure that you store them tightly sealed.

You can learn more about Dropps on their webpage (www.dropps.com) and join Dropps on Facebook.

No compensation was received for this post. A sample pouch of Dropps Fabric Softener Pacs was provided for my use. All opinions expressed are my own or that of my family.

CVS Scenarios - week of 9/2

I have to say that there is not much that inspires me about this week's CVS ad.

There is one deal that I will be heading out to pick up - the Mio. The sale price is just below the Walmart everyday price (at least at my store), so after ECB it is a good deal, I have a couple of coupons and I really enjoy it.

I think I might pick up the Finish Powerball, too. I like when the $3.50 each is combined with an ECB, but it is an okay price and I have expiring coupons.

I have a 25% off coupon, but since that is only non-sale items, I am not sure what I might use that on - perhaps some gum?

Transaction #1
2 - Mio Water Enhancer

-$1 Mio IP (CouponNetwork)
-$1 Mio IP (CouponNetwork - will need two computers, print limit is 1)

Total $5 OOP, earn $1 ECB.

Menu Plan Monday

Labor Day weekend - it makes me sad to think that summer is coming to a close. Sure, I know that fall doesn't start for a couple more weeks, but Labor Day marks the closing of pools, the start of school and many other things that signal the end of summer. We had a busy weekend filled with a soccer tournament, a new floor in the dining room and plans for a picnic. The picnic was delayed and so, now that soccer is done, we are left with a quiet Monday - which is not all bad. Part of me wants to take this unplanned day and be lazy. Part of me wants to take this unplanned day and knock off somethings from my to do list. Maybe I can find a happy hybrid.

Dinner planning with our busy schedules is getting increasingly difficult - some nights we eat before, some nights after; some nights my husband cooks before I am home, some nights I cook while they are at practice and some nights, we have to have a meal that can be ready in moments because neither can prepare a meal. It seems that now, instead of one activity each evening, we have multiple. There are school meetings, practices, and games that are filling our schedule. Toss in my desire to make it to an occasional Zumba class and we are officially full!

Sunday
Homemade Cinnamon Rolls
Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches (@soccer)
Pizza

Monday
Hot Dogs and Chicken Sausage (we'll still cook out, even without a picnic)

Tuesday
Chicken Patty Sandwiches

Wednesday
Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo

Thursday
Coconut Shrimp

Friday
dinner at our favorite local Mexican

Saturday
Bagels
Sandwiches
Pizza (we're hosting the Fantasy Football Draft!)

Breakfast is cereal or oatmeal each morning. Lunch for the kids is either the school lunch or usually a couple of times a week they pack. Lunch for my husband and me is typically sandwiches, frozen meals or leftovers.
