First, I made some Rolled Applewood Bacon Club. These easy to prepare roll-ups provide a variety of textures and flavors in an easy to serve and fun to eat roll-up. The kids didn't like the Swiss cheese, so although they were excited to try the tortilla roll-ups, they didn't eat much of them. I really liked the flavor. I would likely not cut it into cute little rolls, if I was making it just for me. Also, I used Hormel Fully Cooked Bacon in place of the Applewood Bacon because I had it on hand and it was more convenient, but I am definitely interested in trying the Applewood Bacon - I wonder if it has an apple aroma to it?
Second, I made some Turkey Roll Ups. The kids were a little bit happier with these, they liked the idea of eating apples rolled up in lunch meat. I didn't cut the apples quite thin enough, so it was a little hard to keep them rolled up, but even though they didn't look pretty, they tasted delicious. Again, the mixed textures of the cream cheese, the meat and the apples made the snack very satisfying.
There are a number of other recipes available on Hormel's website, including Heartland Smoked Turkey Cheddar Sandwich.
I really liked the flavor of the meats that we tried - the Oven Roasted Turkey and the Honey Deli Ham. I do have to say that the slices are cut thicker than I would normally purchase deli meat. That's not to say that it is thick, many might consider it a thin slice, but I just prefer my meat to be shaved or sliced see-through thin, I feel like I get more meat for the weight on a sandwich when it is shaved - I'm sure it is psychological or my imagination, but that is my perspective. So, to me, whereas the meat worked very well in the recipes I tried, I'm not sure I would enjoy it as much on a standard sandwich.
Hormel Natural Choice meats are Gluten Free - I saw this noted on their website and was a little bit surprised, I guess I never would have considered that deli meat could contain gluten. (after some exploring on some gluten free information sites, it seems that some deli meats do contain gluten.) Hormel also provides Gluten Free recipes in their recipe selection. I think that the Polenta Open Faced Sandwich sounds interesting - you pan fry slices of polenta, then top them with vegetables, meat and cheese and place them under the broiler to finish.
Hormel shared the following with me:
- Did you know that Hormel Foods is a proud sponsor* of Olympic triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker, who is also a swim coach, graduate student and fan of Hormel® Natural Choice® products?
- Serve nutrient-rich meals and snacks as part of a balanced diet. Products that offer 100 percent natural meats with zero preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, like Hormel® Natural Choice® products, can complete a nutritious meal or snack.
- Try new things. Jarrod didn’t grow up being a triathlete, but loved games and sports of all types.
- Cheer each other on. For Jarrod, being active is literally a family affair. He decided to become a triathlete on the advice of his uncle, an Ironman competitor. Jarrod’s older sister Jenna also competes in triathlons, and his younger sister and brother compete on his former high school swim team (which he helps coach.)
Jarrod shared some of his top tips for moms to keep their kids active:
*Hormel Foods is one of several sponsors of triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker.

ReplyDeleteI love, love, love this lunch meat! Have I mentioned that I love this lunchmeat? Lol
ReplyDeleteI have had some kidney problems so nitrate free is my natural inclination and Hormel makes it easy because it's affordable. I can buy their product for $2.50 at my local Walmart. Recently my Kroger added it to their shelves too(a little more expensive there). I've had their oven roasted turkey, honey ham and their roast beef. I wish I could find their bacon. :(. Unfortunately I've been stuck paying $5.29 to $6.99 for the Oscar Mayer and Private Select naturals at Kroger. walmart doesn't even have a natural bacon product (hint hint Hormel).
Additionally, the lunch meats rated very well by dieticians. It's consistently scored well in books and magazines. I'd be thrilled to win this giveaway since Saturdays pretty regularly feature Hormel in our household(It's our sandwich day).
